Twenty years ago, when Rick Shaver and his partner, Lee Melahn, bought a Victorian house in New York's Catskill Mountains, it was with the intention of entertaining. But neither of them could have predicted that their hospitality would eventually be extended to everyone in town. It all started in 1998 when the couple opened Mercantile, a home-goods shop in Andes. Wishing to get to know their patrons and town residents better, they hosted an open house. "It grew from there," says Rick. At first, Lee's mother and Rick did the baking. But as the open house grew, Rosalie Glauser, a friend and owner of the Slow Down Food Co. and Cafe in Andes, joined in on the fun. Raised in Switzerland, Rosalie drew on her recollections of holiday baking as a girl. Now her Swiss-inspired sweets are signature offerings at the party. Says Rosalie, "It's all about good food and tradition."
